The Tech 4O TraiLeader Pro may look like a watch, but it works like the ultimate survival tool, packing everything you need to navigate the wildest of wild places within a compact, rugged case. The accuracy of the TraiLeader Pro derives from its accelerometer sensor, which detects changes in the user's movement (acceleration) and then translates them into varying degrees of electric current within the sensor. Next, the watch decodes these electrical currents into highly accurate measurements of speed and distance and displays them on the watch face. Accelerometer sensors are commonly found within a diverse range of industrial products in which accuracy is critical to performance, including automobile airbags and tilt meters.

Product Description

4Great watch - many functions
By MikeXC
Tech4o's TraiLeader Pro watch gives you a lot of functions for the money. My favorite features are the HR monitor (%Max) display; the PC link; and the long-life battery. After a few weeks of workouts, I was able to 'tweak' my stride length so that the distance measurement was within +/- 3%...not bad! I will say that with all of the features and user screens, it take me almost a week to get comfortable with toggling between screens and setting up my favorite three functions on 1 layout. At 1/2 the price of a comparable GPS watch, you also get some nice features such as a digital compass, altimeter, barometer, and a thermometer! This makes is not only a great running watch but a hiking watch, too. If interested, I posted a full-page review at [...] Happy running!

4Great watch kit, poor email support
By Anthony Faubus
***Update-June 2012-I now fully recommend this kit as best bang for the buck around. Johnson Outdoors now has a signed driver / software file that works well with Windows 7 64 bit. Great stuff!!!***

Being a fan of multi-function watches and fitness I decided I wanted all the features I had grown accustomed to such as altimeter, compass, temp, chrono, timer, etc. and really wanted a heart rate monitor so I settled on this one after reading the reviews. Accelerometer was icing on the cake. This watch has a different learning curve than others but once you get used to the concept, it's easy to manipulate the menus and settings and do some logging and data extraction. The heart rate monitor, pace, distance, compass and temp are accurate to within an acceptable degree to me so I am happy with that. I am also happy for the fact that this is not a huge or heavy watch compared to others I've seen as I am 135 soaking wet and a huge watch is a show stopper for me. It's the right size and weight for me and I barely notice I'm wearing it except for frequent views of the face to monitor status with it's clear numbers and informative display. Wearing the HR monitor is slightly more noticeable but neither are uncomfortable and even though I felt the HR band might slip downward while running and sweaty, it didn't. Just to give an idea of how rigorous I ran during testing, I exceeded 100% MHR and it stayed put so it's a keeper for me. I will pay attention to keep the kit it from getting very moist but with the air gaps on the back of the watch and a seemingly well sealed HR strap, I won't worry too much. I found that the pace and distance even without GPS to be impressively accurate on my measured course which included about 50' variance in altitude per lap. One potentially huge drawback though is, IMHO, utter laziness on the part of Tech4o (Johnson Outdoors) to adequately support this product on their website. For one, they need to post the software and 64bit drivers along with instruction to make it work under Vista 64 and/or Win7-64. I had to use internet searches to find another retailer selling the hardware under the name Topcom as well as some chat groups to get the silly thing working on my Vista64 machine. But, it works, and mine works well so I am happy. To me the price here was reasonable such that if it breaks and I got good use out of it, I might just buy another because the bang for the buck factor is worth it to me. The benefits and accuracy far outweigh the hassles. BTW, I made two attempts over a two week period to get other than a canned email response but Johnson Outdoors Tech4o did not cut the mustard so far as I can tell, and I did check the junk folder. The two responses I did receive were, "Thank you for contacting Johnson Outdoors Tech4o. You should receive a response within 2-3 business days" Yep, that's it, good job people ;)
