Smoking raises spouse’s stroke risk

Marriage To A Smoker Increases Risk By 42% In People Who Never Smoked

Washington: Nonsmokers married to smokers have a greatly increased chance of having strokes, according to a US study published on Tuesday showing yet another hazard from secondhand smoke.
Being married to a smoker raised the stroke risk by 42% in people who have never smoked compared to those married to someone who never smoked, the researchers said.
This jumped to 72% for former smokers married to a current smoker, according to the study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
Former smokers who were married to smokers had a stroke risk similar to people who themselves were smokers.
    "Quitting smoking helps
your own health and also the health of the people living with you," Maria Glymour of Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and Columbia University in New York, who led the study, said in a telephonic interview. The study involved 16,225 people aged 50 and up who had never had a stroke. They were followed for an average of nine years.
Glymour said there is accumulating evidence about the number of health problems linked to secondhand smoke.
Previous research had suggested that secondhand smoke increases the risk of stroke, but Glymour said stroke risk has been studied more extensively in smokers than in people exposed to secondhand smoke.
    People who breathe in sec
ondhand smoke also have a higher risk of lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, respiratory tract infections and heart disease, among other conditions.
A 2006 US surgeon general's report said secondhand smoke contains hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic or cancer-causing. These include formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic, ammonia and
hydrogen cyanide.
For this study, smoking involved cigarettes and not pipes or cigars. It looked at health consequences for the spouses of smokers, but not at the longterm stroke risk in children of smokers due to secondhand smoke. "We know that there are a lot of undesirable health consequences for kids, especially asthma and breathing prob
lems that are exacerbated by secondhand smoke," Glymour said.
The advice by Glymour was echoed by the Stroke Association, which said that passive smokers were nearly twice as likely to have a stroke compared with those not living in a smoky environment.
Joe Korner, from the association, said: "Smoking is a significant risk factor for stroke with a quarter of all strokes being linked to smoking and it can also contribute to high blood pressure which is the single biggest risk factor for stroke."
"We urge people to consider the effects that smoking has on their health and others around them and do all they can to reduce their risk of stroke." REUTERS

‘Forget colas, sweet fruit drinks lead to diabetes too’

Chicago: Sweetened fruit drinks are often marketed as a healthier alternative to non-diet soft drinks but are just as likely to cause weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes, researchers said.
"The public should be made aware that these drinks are not a healthy alternative to soft drinks with regard to risk of type 2 diabetes," Julie Palmer and colleagues at Boston University wrote in their report, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, is closely linked to obesity and has become more common worldwide.

The findings came from a look at nearly 44,000 black women in the United States who were checked from 1995 through 2005.
Those who said they drank two or more non-diet soft drinks a day had a 24% increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes than those in the study who drank fewer than one regular soft drink per month, the research team said.
Women who drank two or more sweetened fruit drinks per day had a 31% increased risk compared to those who drank fewer than one such fruit drink a month. Diet soft drinks, grapefruit juice and orange juice were not linked to a higher diabetes risk, the researchers said.
While pure orange and grapefruit juices also contain sugars naturally, they may have a different metabolic effect or may be more likely to be consumed as part of a meal, the investigators said.
Soft drinks and sweetened juices are often consumed between meals and may lead to snacking, they said.
An earlier study involving thousands of white women also linked diabetes to both soft drinks and sweetened juices, the report said. Another study in the same journal found that eating fruits and vegetables seems to ward off type 2 diabetes, perhaps by preventing obesity or providing protective nutrients, including antioxidants. A few extra steps help control diabetes:
Walking a bit more each day can help people control their Type 2 diabetes but obese people trying to keep weight off may need to exercise harder than they had thought, according to a studiy published on Monday. Simply walking 45 minutes more each day helped people with diabetes use blood sugar better, Michael Trenell of Britain's Newcastle University and colleagues wrote in the journal Diabetes Care. Pancreatic cancer: Now log on for info

Mumbai: When Hollywood star Patrick Swayze, who shot to fame for his film 'Ghost', took ill early this year, a little-known disease called pancreatic cancer was splashed across the Western press. That's the form of cancer, which doctors from super-speciality hospital Tata Memorial Hospital along with Gangaram Hospital in Delhi have set out to address after they noticed a rising incidence.
Tata Hospital chief Dr K Dinshaw on Tuesday inaugurated a website (www.pancreaticcancerindia.com), which promises to offer patients the lowdown about the condition. "Though the cancer is less common here than in the West, we have noticed that the incidence has been steadily increasing with urbanization,'' said gastro-intestinal and hepato-bilary-pancreatic surgeon Shailesh Shrikhande.
While there are no known causes for pancreatic cancer, Dr Shrikhande explained that certain risk factors had been identified which included smoking, alcohol consumption, hereditary factors and a diet lacking fruits and vegetables. Pancreatic cancer, which is cancer of the pancreatic gland (a digestive gland), affects 0.5 to 2.4 per lakh men and 0.2 to 1.8 women per lakh in India and is the fourth largest killer among cancers in the US. Unfortunately, most local patients seek help too late, said doctors who hoped the website would help spread the much-needed awarenesss.
"I have noticed that patients of pancreatic cancer go through a rollercoaster of emotions—anger, feelings of 'why me' and isolation. We, as surgeons, often don't understand the difference between information and communication,'' admitted gastro-intestinal surgeon Adarsh Chaudhary from Delhi.

The website with its interactive interface, resources on latest treatment options and useful links hopes to bridge this gap. As dean of Tata, K L Mohandas, said there are many websites which give information on pancreatic cancer, but the website was the need of the hour as there was need for a 'desi' resource that addressed problems unique to our continent.

    Tata plans

Cancer hub Tata Memorial Hospital is all set to inaugurate a new building—12-storeyed-high—on its premises next year. Hospital chief K Dinshaw said, "The new building will house facilities such as tele-medicine and research.'' Besides being able to reach out to more patients, the facility would also cater to budding cancer specialists.

    An inspirational
    last lecture

If there was any doubt about the place of technology in the world of diseases, one just needs to Google 'Prof Randy Pausch'. The professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh died of complications related to pancreatic cancer on July 25 but jumped to fame after he gave an inspirational 'last lecture' to students at his university. The lecture delivered even as he was 'dying of pancreatic cancer' urged students to "achieve their childhood dreams''. The speech was so inspirational that it was uploaded on You Tube and went on to be viewed by millions. He used his 'fame' to even urge the US Congress to give money for research on pancreatic cancer.

Alternate Way to Eliminate CANCER: John Hopkins

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY           (TRY THE KEY WORD) AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHN HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY .

Cancer Update from John Hopkins

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard
Tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented
From multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These
Could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9 When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Splenda, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be raw honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or Celtic sea salt.

B.
Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with raw milk cancer cells are being starved.

C.
Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

D. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
Temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

E. Avoid coffee, tea, and processed chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. Drink 8 or more glasses of water a day to help flush out the cancer cells.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL , U S - PLEASE READ

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well.

Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.
Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.

This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else.

Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper . The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.
